Thom L. Cooper, CELA
Founder of Cooper, Adel & Associates

Over thirty years ago, Attorney Cooper created the law firm that would become Cooper, Adel and Associates with the goal of representing seniors in a way that maximized their independence and minimized the stress and burden placed on loved ones. Since then, Attorney Cooper has provided educational seminars throughout Ohio to spread the word about estate planning and elder law. He has helped thousands of seniors and their families find public benefits to protect and preserve their assets. Attorney Cooper is one of only 22 attorneys in Ohio certified as Elder Law Specialists by the National Elder Law Foundation (NELF) and Attorney Cooper was among the charter members to become certified in 1995. NELF is approved by the Ohio Commission on Certification of Attorneys as Specialists and by the American Bar Association.

Attorney Cooper is rated “10 Superb” by AVVO which is a professional organization that rates 95% of the attorneys in the US and considers years in practice, disciplinary history, professional achievements and industry recognition.

Attorney Cooper has devoted a portion of his practice to veterans and their surviving spouses. He has been admitted to practice before the United States Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims and is accredited by the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Attorney Cooper is a past president of the American Association of Trust, Estate and Elder Law Attorneys (AATEELA), an invitation-only, nationwide professional association and a member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA).

Attorney Cooper graduated from Allegheny College, obtained a PhD from The Ohio State University and a law degree from Capital University. Attorney Cooper and his wife, Kathy, who works at the firm, have two daughters, one is completing her residency in surgery at Johns Hopkins and the other is completing her law degree at the University of Dayton.

Mitchell J. Adel, CELA
Managing Partner

Attorney Adel has provided educational seminars to seniors and their families throughout Ohio. Attorney Adel graduated from Ithaca College in New York and Capital Law School in Ohio, earning his Juris Doctorate in 2000. In his spare time, Mitch and his wife Kim enjoy spending time with their niece and nephew and play co-rec softball and golf with their friends.

Daniel H. Vu
Senior Associate Elder Law Attorney

Attorney Vu joined Cooper, Adel & Associates to pursue his interest in estate planning. Attorney Vu has been instrumental in developing the firm's advanced estate planning strategies including special trusts designed to protect and preserve the assets of many Ohio families. He has been closely involved in assisting our clients who are Veterans and their surviving spouses to apply for benefits and to coordinate those benefits with other programs. Attorney Vu is among a select group of attorneys in the State of Ohio who have been admitted to practice before the United States Court of Appeals For Veterans Claims in addition to receiving accreditation from the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Dan is a member of the Ohio State Bar Association. Attorney Vu has spoken to groups around Ohio about the estate planning implications related to hydraulic fracking (oil and gas from shale) as well as trust and estate planning problems that are unique to farming families in Ohio.  He is also a contributing author to the book, Over the Hill and Under Obamacare, that discusses the impact of Obamacare on seniors.

Attorney Vu graduated from Miami University with an undergraduate degree, majoring in Political Science and obtained his Juris Doctorate from the University of Cincinnati College of Law. After working for a Special Counsel to the Ohio Attorney General, Attorney Vu joined Cooper, Adel & Associates, where he was promoted to Senior Associate Elder Law Attorney in 2012. Attorney Vu and his wife were born and raised near Cincinnati. They enjoy frequent visits to local museums and parks. In particular, they are proud members of the historical Cincinnati Museum Center. When not researching the latest estate planning techniques, Dan enjoys taking time to learn more about our country's history. As they say, you can’t know where you are going until you know where you have been.

Edward A. Brown
Senior Associate Elder Law Attorney

Attorney Brown became interested in elder law as a result of his personal experience acting as the executor for his grandfather’s estate. Ted joined Cooper, Adel & Associates to translate the lessons he learned from this difficult experience into action by assisting his clients through the trust and estate planning process. Attorney Brown works closely with the firm’s senior team to develop estate planning strategies designed to protect and preserve the assets of Ohio families. He also leads the firm’s team that helps clients and their families after death. 

Attorney Brown is a member of the American Bar Association Section of Real Property, Trust and Estate Law, the Ohio Bar Association and the Cincinnati Bar Association. He is a regular speaker for groups around Ohio about trust and estate planning strategies.  Ted is also a contributing author to Over the Hill and Under Obamacare.  Attorney Brown is among a select group of attorneys in the State of Ohio who have been admitted to practice before the United States Court of Appeals For Veterans Claims in addition to receiving accreditation from the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Attorney Brown studied history in his undergraduate program at Xavier and obtained his JD from the University of Dayton School of Law. After joining Cooper, Adel and Associates in 2011, Ted was promoted to Senior Associate Elder Law Attorney in 2013, recognizing his contributions to his clients and the firm. 

In his spare time, Ted is a Traffic Operations Consultant for the Mariemont Police Department and is a member of the Mariemont Civic Association.  Ted is a space history as well as an American history buff and often writes blogs for our firm’s website about veteran’s contributions, such as those of his grandfather, Lt. Colonel William F. Brown, who survived behind enemy lines during the Korean Conflict.  Ted’s wife is also an attorney.  They enjoy cooking and traveling and Ted is an avid Cincinnati Bengals fan.

Nathaniel T. Simpson
Associate Elder Law Attorney

Attorney Simpson joined Cooper, Adel & Associates in 2011 as a member of our Medicaid Team. Elder law is a natural fit for Nathan whose career goal is to work in a field where he can build long term, collaborative relationships with clients and their families to assist them in meeting their goals and help them avoid problems in the future.  Nathan has a personal mission to inform seniors, who are often unaware, about benefits that may be available to help them pay for long term health care, and to determine how they can legally obtain benefits at the earliest point possible with full disclosure.  Nathan is also there for them when the going gets tough, as evidenced by his experience in administrative hearings and appeals on behalf of his clients.

Attorney Simpson is a member of the Ohio State Bar Association and the Cincinnati Bar Association.  He has spoken to groups around Ohio about crisis planning.  He is also a contributing author to the book, Over the Hill and Under Obamacare, and maintains a companion website to keep our clients up-to-date on the latest news - good and bad - about the law. Attorney Simpson graduated from Miami University with an undergraduate degree, majoring in both History and Political Science and obtained his JD from the University of Cincinnati College of Law where he was an Urban Law Fellow.  Attorney Simpson is among a select group of attorneys in the State of Ohio who have been admitted to practice before the United States Court of Appeals For Veterans Claims in addition to receiving accreditation from the Department of Veterans Affairs.  Attorney Simpson and his wife are actively involved with Special Olympics.

Keith A. Stevens
Associate Elder Law Attorney

Attorney Keith A. Stevens is an Elder Law Attorney in the statewide Elder Law practice of Cooper, Adel & Associates, L.P.A. where his focuses on trusts and estate planning. Attorney Stevens graduated from the Robert E. Cook Honors College at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a degree in History and obtained his Juris Doctorate from Capital University Law School. Prior to joining Cooper, Adel & Associates Attorney Stevens clerked for the Franklin County Probate Court and for the Cincinnati Insurance Company’s Office of Trial Council in Columbus. Attorney Stevens is a member of the Ohio State Bar Association and the Columbus Bar Association.
Virginia McCann
Associate Elder Law Attorney

Attorney Virginia S. McCann is an Elder Law Attorney in the statewide Elder Law practice of Cooper, Adel & Associates, L.P.A. where her area of focus is on nursing home planning. Attorney McCann graduated from Kent State University with a degree in Philosophy and obtained her Juris Doctorate from the University of Akron School of Law. Attorney McCann is a member of the Columbus Bar Association and the Ohio State Bar Association.
